A Pro tool, up close
Close the lid.
Without Barnook the Mac falls asleep;
with it, the download keeps going.
In use
With the lid open, everything runs as usual.

The commands you memorized, now buttons.
You don’t need to know these Terminal commands. One button does the same thing, without your admin password or noting the old value first.

17 hidden Mac settings,
one button to undo.
Turn hidden Mac settings on and off with switches. Barnook remembers how things were before, and one button puts them back exactly.
- Finder: hidden files, the folder’s location and free space, file name endings (.jpg)
- Dock: auto-hide, how long before it appears, how fast it slides, hide recent apps
- Screenshots: where they’re saved, file type, window shadow, the corner preview
- Keyboard: how fast a held key repeats, repeat instead of the accent menu
- Hidden folder files (.DS_Store): skip external and shared drives, clear a folder

Dev server won’t quit?
Find it and stop it.
When you get a “port already in use” error, see which program is holding it and stop it right there. Barnook asks it to quit first and forces it only if it doesn’t respond.
- Servers other devices on your Wi‑Fi can reach are marked “Open to network”
- Programs macOS needs are hidden, so you can’t stop them by mistake
- Only programs you started appear; no admin password needed
Lid closed,
still safe.
Lid mode changes a Mac system setting, so a small helper app you allow once takes care of it. The helper checks battery and temperature itself every 15 seconds, so the safety net holds even if the app hangs.
- Allow it once in System Settings › Login Items
- It does two things only: the sleep setting and refreshing web addresses
- Remove it any time from the ⋯ menu

Good to know.
Is it safe to put my MacBook in a bag with lid mode on?
Lid mode turns itself off when the battery drops to your limit (20% by default) or the Mac gets hot. The helper app checks every 15 seconds on its own, so this works even if the app hangs. Still, avoid leaving it on for long somewhere without airflow.
Why do I have to click “Allow” the first time?
Staying awake with the lid closed and refreshing web addresses need administrator rights on your Mac. A small helper app that can do only those two things handles them; you allow it once in System Settings › General › Login Items. It talks only to Barnook, and you can remove it any time from the ⋯ menu. Everything else works without allowing anything.
What happens to lid mode if the app quits unexpectedly?
Lid mode only lasts while the app is running. If Barnook quits or hangs, the helper puts things back right away, and the same happens if you remove the helper or restart the Mac. Settings you changed yourself in Terminal are left alone.
How do I undo the Mac settings I changed?
Barnook remembers exactly how each setting was before it first changed it. Revert all puts that back and removes settings that weren’t there before. It still remembers after you quit and reopen the app.
Does it connect to the internet?
Only to barnook.pages.dev when you activate a license and about once a week to recheck a purchased one, sending just the license key and a random number the app created. No analytics or tracking, and for the clipboard it only checks whether something changed, never what. See Privacy.
Why isn’t it on the App Store?
App Store apps can’t stop other programs or change Mac system settings, so Barnook comes from this site instead. It’s signed with an Apple developer certificate and passed Apple’s security check (notarization).
What’s free and what’s Pro?
Keep awake, stopping running servers, clipboard, display off and refreshing web addresses stay free. Awake with lid closed and Mac settings (Finder, Dock, screenshots, keyboard, hidden folder files) are Pro, free to try for 14 days from first use. Revert all always works, even after the trial.
How does the license work?
$4.99 once lets one person use version 1 and its updates on up to 3 of their Macs. Paste the key from your receipt into License at the top of the Mac settings window. Full refund within 14 days of purchase.
